Ven. Tharig Rinpoche Jamyang Dhamchoe Nyima was born in eastern Tibet on the 13th of January 1923 A.D. Eighth child of Rinzin Namgyal and Sonam Palden, he came into this world under several auspicious signs. It was said by Rinpoche's mother that for the whole time of her pregnancy she felt her body being unnaturally light and constantly pervaded by a sensation of peace. At the time Sonam Palden delivered, it was said that a ring of white light descended over the tent of Rinpoche's family and surrounded it for seven days, a cup full of water suddenly turned into milk and a flower bloomed through the snow.

At the tender age of three he was recognized by H.H. Sakya Jamyang Rinpoche and H.E. Drag Shul Trinly Rinpoche to be the reincarnation of the previous 5th Tharig Rinpoche and was consequently enthroned in the Sa Ngag Cho Zom Gonpa in eastern Tibet , following the traditional Tibetan Buddhist customs.

In his youth and teenager hood Tharig Rinpoche studied under the supreme guidance of Ven. Yonten Rinpoche (tantric teacher), Ven. Tse Tsam (ritual teacher) and Khenpo Jam Then (Tibetan grammar and philosophy teacher). From these and many other masters, along with the Sutras and Tantras, he received teachings on the three main Buddhist philosophies (Hina Yana, Maha Yana and Vajra Yana) and on the five branches of the Tibetan Buddhism: philosophy, grammar, medicine, art and logic.

Tharig Rinpoche spent most of his time devoting to the Gods of the four main Tantras, a devotion felt by everyone through his extraordinary activities. In 1955, when the conflict between Communist China and Tibet was still carrying on along the borders of the Tibetan kingdom, inspired by his night dreams (fiery beasts, dragons and lions beaten by other weaker animals) Tharig Rinpoche left his monastery along with many other rinpoches, monks and laymen. At the end of 1957 they reached Sakya, near the capital city of Tibet , and the following year Tharig Rinpoche entered Lhasa , where he remained until the end of 1959. At that time came the news that the Sa Ngag Cho Zom Gonpa had been attacked by the communist army and that many monks and laymen were killed and the survivors arrested. Following another advice received in his dream Tharig Rinpoche and few other people escaped the massacre in Lhasa and continued their journey until they had reached the Upper Mustang, in northwestern Nepal . Here H.H. Sakya Trizen came to speak in a dream to Tharig Rinpoche and warned him not to leave that land before two years had passed: at that time, a fact unknown to Rinpoche and the others who traveled with him, the Nepali government had not yet deliberated about the condition of escaping Tibetans and therefore they were treated as illegal immigrates and many were arrested. In respect of the words of H.H. Sakya Trizen, Tharig Rinpoche reached the Kathmandu valley in 1963 A.D.: at that time H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama had obtained that wherever in India , Nepal and Buthan escaping Tibetans should be granted the status of refugees.

For the first times, Tharig Rinpoche lived in a tent near the holy stupa of Boudha, northeast of Kathmandu city, in the same place where his monastery is now built. Thanks to the many donations of the devotees, in 1968 A.D. Tharig Rinpoche could begin the construction of a new monastery. One year later the finished building was officially inaugurated (although several will be the additions and changes in the following years). In 1979 A.D. Tharig Rinpoche began the construction of a new building in Parping, south of the Kathmandu valley, to serve as retreat and meditation center.

Many are the foreign countries visited by the 6th Tharig Rinpoche to spread the word of the Buddha. There, thanks to the contributions given by his devotees he could also build several Buddhist Centers for the benefit of the local communities: two centers in Malaysia , in Ipo and in Ulu Yam Baru; one center in Singapore; three centers in Taiwan .
It was during a long trip that would have taken Tharig Rinpoche to visit all of the centers he established in Southeast Asia , that in Singapore , on the 15th of May 1998 , he passed away. As for when he had come into this world, at the death of Tharig Rinpoche many were the unusual events observed. Near the Sa Ngag Cho Zom Gonpa in eastern Tibet there is a lake that it is said is filled with water only when Tharig Rinpoche is walking on this world. At the time of the death of the 6th Tharig Rinpoche it had been reported that the lake was completely dry. In the month of October 2000, at the discovery that after two years the lake was filled with water again, the search for the reincarnation of Tharig Rinpoche began.
